Steve Flato - microtonal electric guitar w/ mechanical sustaining device & effects

Performed/recorded in February 2017 at the first annual SlowSD festival at UCSD in San Diego, California.

“In The Garden Of Eating” is a collaborative composition by T.J. Borden and Steve Flato. Inspired by Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Gold Dust”, in which the musicians are to stay awake for an extended period of time before the performance, Borden & Flato’s score calls for them to dine at The Olive Garden directly before the performance of the piece and consume one of their “endless” dishes until they are in physical discomfort. Once on stage, both performers follow a timeline that includes patterns of microtonal intervals, variations on those patterns, and instructions on how to transition from section to section. Utilizing the loose requirements over the course of the almost two-hour composition, Borden & Flato explore subtle deviations and side-roads freely while maintaining a coherent structural flow.
